EFFECTIVE LOCK OUT / TAG OUT (LOTO) PRACTICES TO ENSURE SAFETY AT WORKPLACES

Course Introduction

Electricity is a vital part of our daily lives, powering everything from homes and offices to factories and hospitals. However, without proper safety measures, working with electrical systems can be extremely hazardous.

This course introduces Lockout/Tagout (LOTO) – a proven method to prevent the accidental release of stored energy during installation, operation, testing, maintenance, or repairs. Participants will learn how to properly isolate, lock, and tag equipment to ensure a safe working environment.

By mastering LOTO procedures, organizations can reduce workplace accidents, protect employees, extend equipment lifespan, and avoid costly downtime.

Objectives

  • Understand key electrical safety terms and concepts (arc flash, faults, permit to work, earth fault, etc.)
  • Identify major hazards: arc flash, electric shock, electrical fire, falling from heights.
  • Recognize the causes, consequences, and control measures of arc flash and arc blast.
  • Apply methods to minimize electric shock, fire, and related risks.
  • Implement Permit to Work procedures effectively.
  • Understand the goals, steps, and benefits of LOTO.
  • Identify hazardous energy sources that require LOTO.
  • Learn the eight steps of LOTO procedures.
  • Appreciate the importance of protective devices and electrical earthing.
  • Gain awareness of Electricity Act 1990 & Regulations 1994 related to workplace safety.
